There is no doubt that France boasts some of the most stunning villages in the world. Many of these villages have been preserved and retain their beauty and charm. If you would like to visit some of the most beautiful villages on your next holiday in the South of France here are some suggestions to start you off.
Cordes-sur-Ciel
This charming arts and crafts town is perched on a hilltop in Languedoc-Roussillon. The picturesque landscape is dotted with ancient houses, narrow streets, and Gothic arches. A visit to Cordes-sur-Ciel is a great day trip from nearby Albi.
Uzes
Lofty towers and narrow causeways feature prominently in this medieval village. Favoured by writers and artists throughout its history, Uzes was once called “the premier duchy of France” by Louis XIII. Find out why by staying at the grand 18th century Chateau d’Arpaillargues.
Gordes
Gordes is one of the most well-known villages in Provence, located just east of Avignon. A vibrant arts community of silk painters, potters, and weavers, the town has become a popular weekend escape for Parisians. The homes are made of gorgeous golden stone, rising along the hills to the spectacular Renaissance chateau at the top. Be sure to visit the museum dedicated to former resident artist Victor Vasarely.
Roussillon
Just northeast of Gordes is the hilltop town of Roussillon, located in the heart of Provence’s “ochre country,” where the earth is a deep russet colour. The houses are a rainbow of burnt oranges, reds, and dusty pinks—a true sight at sunset. Artists, writers, and trendy city folk are drawn here and many have established second homes in the village.
Roquebrune
The medieval hill town of Roquebrune is located southwest of Menton along the Cote d’Azur. Extensive restorations all over the village have brought back much of the original allure of the steep stairways and alleys that date back centuries. A visit to Roquebrune wouldn’t be complete without a trip to the 10th century Moncollet castle, the oldest in France and the last Carolingian castle still standing.
I’ve heard that this part of France is the most beautiful. Thanks for sharing such a useful post with us. Regards from Hotel Orly.
Roussillon is a very lovely place to visit! That area of Provence is truly stunning.
“Cordes-sur-Ciel” is one of my favourite villages of France in this area, but its a long way from the Languedoc-Roussillon…!?!
To correct you + your page copy on this post;
The village of Cordes-sur-Ciel is in the;
- Department = Tarn,
- Region = Midi-Pyrénées
(Close to the Medieval town of Albi, the birthplace of famous artist Toulouse Lautrec of the Post-Impressionist period).
Hopefully the geography has not caught too many people out & i would still wholeheartedly recommend a visit to beautiful village of “Cordes-sur-Ciel” the next time you you visiting or passing through the “Tarn”, or the nearby “Albi” and the Toulouse Lautrec Art Gallery and Museum.
Enjoy! – Cordes-sur-Ciel et bon vacances,
